Connection Between Bharatanatyam and the Natya Shastra

Bharatanatyam is one of India’s most ancient and respected classical dance forms. Its roots trace back to the Natya Shastra, written by Bharata Muni. This text is the foundation of Indian performing arts, shaping how Bharatanatyam is learned, practiced, and performed even today.

The Foundation of the Art

The Natya Shastra introduces Abhinaya, the art of expression, divided into four parts:

  • Angika (body movement)

  • Vachika (music and sound)

  • Aharya (costume and appearance)

  • Satvika (inner emotion)

In Bharatanatyam, these elements come together seamlessly, allowing dancers to combine technique with storytelling.

Technique and Structure

Bharatanatyam strictly follows the movement principles described in the Natya Shastra. Elements like:

  • Mudras (hand gestures)

  • Footwork and rhythmic steps

  • Araimandi posture

all originate from this ancient system. Many of these movements are also seen in temple sculptures, especially those of Shiva as Nataraja, symbolizing the divine nature of dance.

Expression and Rasa

A key concept from the Natya Shastra is Rasa—the emotional experience of art. Bharatanatyam dancers express the Navarasas (nine emotions) through facial expressions, eye movements, and gestures.

This transforms dance into a powerful storytelling medium that connects deeply with the audience.

The Margam Tradition

The traditional Bharatanatyam performance sequence, known as Margam, is also inspired by the Natya Shastra. It moves from pure dance (Nritta) to expressive storytelling (Nritya), creating a balanced and engaging performance.
