Gati Bhedas in bharatanatyam | Online Bharatanatyam classes

What are Gati Bhedas?

The word Gati means "movement" or "gait," while Bheda means "variation." Together, Gati Bhedas describe the various ways a dancer moves to represent different beings and personalities.

These distinctive movements help bring stories to life and make character portrayals more convincing.

The Ten Traditional Gati Bhedas

1. Hamsi Gati (Goose)

A graceful and elegant gait characterized by smooth, alternating steps resembling the movement of a goose.

2. Mayuri Gati (Peacock)

Delicate and majestic movements that imitate the proud and graceful walk of a peacock.

3. Mrigi Gati (Deer)

Quick, light, and darting movements that capture the alertness and agility of a deer.

4. Gaja Gati (Elephant)

Slow, steady, and powerful strides that reflect the strength and majesty of an elephant.

5. Turangini Gati (Horse)

Rhythmic and energetic movements inspired by the gait of a trotting horse.

6. Simhi Gati (Lion)

Bold and commanding movements that convey courage, authority, and strength.

7. Bhujangi Gati (Snake)

Fluid, smooth, and serpentine movements that resemble the slithering motion of a snake.

8. Manduki Gati (Frog)

Light hopping movements used to depict the characteristic leaps of a frog.

9. Vira Gati (Heroic Gait)

Confident, grounded, and purposeful movements often used to portray warriors and heroic characters.

10. Manavi Gati (Human)

Natural human walking patterns adapted to suit different characters and situations in dance.

Why are Gati Bhedas Important?

Gati Bhedas help dancers:

  • Enhance storytelling

  • Differentiate characters effectively

  • Improve stage presence

  • Add authenticity to performances

  • Develop greater control over movement

A dancer portraying a lion, a deer, or a heroic king must move differently to make the character believable. Gati Bhedas provide the vocabulary for these distinctions.

Gati Bhedas are a fascinating aspect of Bharatanatyam that showcase the art form's attention to detail and storytelling. From the elegance of Hamsi Gati to the strength of Vira Gati, each movement style helps dancers create vivid and memorable performances.
